Un-synced Melody

This is in my "TOP 4" favorite works of contemporary art ever.  By Anri Sala. I first saw it a few years ago in Venice and haven't stopped thinking about it since. I love it here too. Two interpretations of Maurice Ravel’s “Piano Concerto for the Left Hand in D-major” (1929–30) are projected simultaneously...

Robotic Flip Books

by David Behringer of the Two Percent

Juan Fontanive "Films Without Light" @ Danese Corey Gallery 511 West 22nd St., ends 6 Feb.  Exhibition Website

Artist Juan Fontanive creates self-flipping flip books of butterflies (and hummingbirds) that flip at the speed of BUTTERFLY WINGS!!!  WHAT?!!   Every image is drawn by him, then re-printed in the books in a robotic flipping mechanism that he also built/designed.  Check out a video of one here and run to the gallery to see many more!  I dare you not to smile.

Painting with Thread

by David Behringer of the Two Percent

Cayce Zavalgia @ Lyons Wier Gallery, 542 W 24th St, ends 12/12.

One of Cayce Zavaglia photorealistic portraits made of thread.

Cayce Zavaglia creates photorealistic portraits of friends and family with ONLY THREAD.  A few years ago she "noticed" the BACKS of the embroidered works that form "blindly" as she works on the front.  So not only will you get to see the back of one of these, but she's also created several paintings of the chaotic reverse side of the thread works.  Wow.
