David Cross "Making America Great Again!" Tour

  • The Ballroom at Warehouse Live (Houston, TX)

David Cross

Emmy Award winner and Grammy Award nominee David Cross is an inventive performer, writer, and producer on stage and screens both big and small.

Cross will return to the road in 2016 with a stand-up tour playing theatres across the country. Named one of the Top 100 Stand-Up Comedians of All Time by Comedy Central, Cross will launch his "Making America Great Again!" tour in January 2016 and play theatres nationwide thru April 2016. He last toured in 2009 with a solo stand-up show in support of his New York Times Bestseller, I Drink for a Reason. That hugely successful comedy show was filmed at Boston's Wilbur Theater for a special, entitled "Bigger and Blackerer," which premiered on EPIX in April 2010 before being released on CD and DVD by Sub Pop. His previous comedy special, "David Cross: The Pride is Back," aired on HBO in 1999, and was named one of the 25 best stand-up comedy specials and concert films of all time by ROLLING STONE in July 2015.

Cross has released two other comedy albums – the Grammy Award- nominated, "Shut Up You Fucking Baby" and "It's Not Funny." In 2003 he released the DVD, "Let America Laugh," a documentary film of his groundbreaking stand up tour of alternative, indie rock clubs.

In January 2016, IFC will premiere the long-awaited third season of "Todd Margaret," created by and starring Cross as an ill-equipped American who finds himself running the London sales office of the energy drink company for which he works. IFC will air six episodes, with the first three debuting on January 7, and the following three on January 14. The original iteration, "The Increasingly Poor Decisions of Todd Margaret," aired on IFC from 2010 to 2012.

Cross reteamed with his "Mr. Show" collaborator and co-creator, Bob Odenkirk, to create "Mr. Show with Bob and David," a four-episode revamp of the iconic sketch comedy series, which premiered November 2015 on Netflix.

In September 2013, David Cross and Bob Odenkirk released the book, "Hollywood Said No! Orphaned Film Scripts, Bastard Scenes, and Abandoned Darlings from the Creators of Mr. Show." Written with friend and fellow "Mr. Show" alum Brian Posehn, "Hollywood Said No!" is a collection of never-before-seen scripts, orphaned sketch ideas and reminiscences. In support of the book, Cross and Odenkirk embarked on a multi-city tour, performing their first official stand-up comedy shows together since their sold-out national tour in 2002.

In 2014, Cross released the indie film "Hits," which he wrote and directed. A black comedy about the nature of fame in the YouTube era, the film is set in a small town in upstate New York and stars Matt Walsh and Meredith Hagner. It first premiered at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival, and then helped raise funds for its theatrical distribution via a successful Kickstarter campaign. In addition to a traditional theatrical release, the film was also available to fans across the nation on BitTorrent, where they were able to pay what they wanted to view it.

On the big screen, Cross has appeared in the independent features, "Kill Your Darlings" alongside Daniel Radcliffe and Michael C. Hall, and the dramedy "It's a Disaster," opposite Julia Stiles and America Ferrera. Other film credits include "Abel," "Year One," Christopher Guest's "Waiting for Guffman," "Men in Black" and "Men in Black II," "Ghost World," Michel Gondry's "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind," "Pitch Perfect 2," "I'm Not There," and provided his vocal talents for several animated films, including "Megamind," the "Kung Fu Panda" series and "Curious George."

On television, Cross reprised his beloved role as Dr. Tobias Fünke' on the fourth season of "Arrested Development" on Netflix. During its original critically acclaimed, Emmy Award-winning run on FOX, Cross was twice-nominated as part of the ensemble cast for a Screen Actors Guild Award.

Cross's introduction to the TV scene came with "The Ben Stiller Show," where Cross honed his comedy writing skills and shared a 1993 Emmy Award for Outstanding Achievement in Writing in a Variety or Music Program.

The original "Mr. Show with Bob and David" received three Emmy Award nominations for both Writing and Music & Lyrics. Cross also served as a writer and contributor for "Tenacious D." He also wrote, produced and starred in the Comedy Central animated series "Freak Show," which he co-created with H. Jon Benjamin.

Cross currently resides in Brooklyn, New York.

Barbara Lynn

  • Antone's (Austin, TX)

Barbara Lynn

Texan Barbara Lynn first came to New Orleans in 1962, when producer Huey P. Meaux brought her to Cosimo Matassa's studio to cut the R&B smash "You'll Lose A Good Thing." Lynn's soulful vocals--and bluesy guitar licks --had a swampier feel than most R&B at the time, and fueled by Joe Barry's bayou rulin' Vikings (one of the most underrated bands of the time) in tandem with Mac Rebennack's groove-laden organ, she went straight to the top of the charts. Today, Lynn may be best known as the writer of "Oh Baby (We Got a Good Thing Goin')", which the Rolling Stones covered back in '65--but her later Atlantic material should by no means be overlooked.

Standing in the same sweet shadow as Doreen Schaeffer, Inez Foxx, Rosie & the Originals, Doris Troy, Lavern Baker, Ruth Brown and Margaret Lewis, Barbara perfectly walks the line between teenage innocence and worldly, older-than-her-years adult hurt. Wounded perhaps, wiser for it, but nowhere near ready to give it all up. Now that' what we mean when we say soul music!

"The singing never left me. That's all I ever wanted to be. I just love to entertain. I don't care if its for an audience of one." -- Barbara Lynn

Nada Surf + Moving Panoramas

  • Granada Theatre (Dallas, Tx)

Nada Surf: Having recorded five albums in 10 years and toured extensively in support of all of them, Nada Surf opted to follow 2012’s cracking The Stars Are Indifferent To Astronomy with a brief but well-earned hiatus. So in January 2015, when Caws informed Nada Surf’s vociferous Facebook following that a new record was just about done, the news was greeted with explosive enthusiasm. The music was in the can, he announced, and all that remained was to finish up a few lyrics and sing a few vocals; something he planned to do on off-days off during an upcoming solo acoustic tour. Caws even included a photo of the recording set-up he was bringing in the car.
“I was so eager to have an album done that I believed in it as it was,” Caws recalls. “But the great thing about being 'finished' is that you can take a breath and evaluate, because the pressure to 'do it' is gone. The more I listened and thought about it, the more I realized that I might want to keep working. Also, I'd sent the tracks to my friend Josh, who runs Barsuk Records, the label we’ve been on since 2002, and he said 'It's great,' but followed that with a pregnant pause. I got the message. I didn't take that as a critique as much as a belief that I could do better. It was very freeing,” Caws continues. “There were already a bunch of songs in the can that we all liked, so I could think more expansively about what the album could be."
Caws’ instinct to heed his inner editorial voice proved to be spot on: he dropped a few songs, tweaked others, and wrote a few more that, “definitely feel different from what we’ve done before,” he says. “Believe You’re Mine” was rejiggered and sped up, while “Cold To See Clear” – originally penned for a collaboration to be named later with Big Hassle Page 2 Michael Lerner of Telekinesis – was deemed a better fit for Nada Surf. Just before starting You Know Who You Are, Caws had gone to Los Angeles to write with Dan Wilson, who in addition to his success with Semisonic, has won two Grammy Awards for his songs with Adele and the Dixie Chicks. They weren't writing for anyone in particular, they just wanted to see what would happen. Caws felt so good about “Rushing” and “Victory's Yours," that he asked Wilson if he could include them on the new Nada Surf album. Wilson gave the green light, and even offered to contribute backing vocals. When the band returned to Hoboken, NJ for another round of sessions with producer/guitarist Tom Beaujour (Jennifer O'Connor, Amy Bezunartea), the songs were tracked.
And lo and behold, what would have been another really good Nada Surf album (their seventh since getting signed to a major in the go-go 90's and scoring a worldwide alterna-hit with “Popular”) became what could well be the most representative collection of the group’s two-decade career, all while pushing towards whatever comes next. While the band has always had a surplus of horsepower for velocity rockers and an astounding level of confidence live, they've been gaining the discipline and finesses to change gears, more so with each release. Captured in the album’s 10 tracks is every beloved facet of the band, but You Know Who You Are also finds much on offer that stands apart from anything previously heard in the band’s diverse catalogue.
“Sometimes it feels like, to our audience at least, we are two or three different bands at once,” Caws concludes. “It seems some people are looking to feel better, for encouragement getting over their obstacles, for help figuring life out… not that I've done that myself, other people are looking for love songs, and then some others just want to rock.”

MOVING PANORAMAS are an all-gal dream gaze trio from Austin, TX. Singer/guitarist LESLIE SISSON, had been living in Brooklyn while playing in The Wooden Birds and came back to her home state of Texas to be closer to the band and her family. She took on a job teaching music at School of Rock where she met bassist ROZIE CASTOE, who was in an 80's show Leslie directed. Meanwhile, Leslie was subbing on bass in Black Forest Fire with drummer KAREN SKLOSS, a longtime friend and former film grad school classmate. The stars aligned when the three girls' primary projects had each run their course, so Leslie decided to combine forces with Rozie and Karen to try something new. Sharing influential gazey roots inspired audial expansion into something spacey but not alienating, loud yet still light, painting panoramic sound against a moving melodic backdrop. Thus became MOVING PANORAMAS, who finished their debut LP titled One, with Louie Lino at Resonate in Austin, releasing on October 2nd, 2015, on Modern Outsider Records.

Leslie is known for her work on vocals/guitar in The Wooden Birds with Andrew Kenny of American Analog Set and as a solo artist. Her history includes time in Matt Pond PA, Western Keys, Black Lipstick, Black Forest Fire, Tanworth-in-Arden, and Aero Wave, with guest performances for American Analog Set, Windsor for the Derby, Rhythm of Black Lines, Mark Gardener of Ride, Dan Mangan, John Wesley Coleman, Snowden, and Broken Social Scene. She also toured as crew for Vampire Weekend, ...And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead, and Sons and Daughters.

New Beat Fund (acoustic)

New Beat Fund birthed when a piggy bank with the words "New Beat Fund" encrypted on it was catapulted into the facade of a corporate building. No joke. Somewhere in that transaction it became apparent a jar full of "fuck you's" and "I owe you's" would no longer lend it's help to an artist. So we started our own fund; no debts to the bullshit, just a direct deposit from your's truly and the people who vibe what it is we're doing. And what exactly are we doing? We're letting our music run free, streaking down the beach, nuts hangin' in the Cali breeze, smokin' Cali trees. We shimmy shimmy to the sounds of the Timby, some Red Chili, Slim Shady, and one Foxy ass Lady. Reppin' real music flowin' from an honest place. Keepin' true to who we are, how we're feeling, what we're seeing around us and the way we react to it. Everything New Beat Fund is done 100% by New Beat Fund. Burnie Baker, Fat Snapz Lalib, Buttonwill McKill, and Silky Johnson. No need for specificity. So vibe some tunes, whether you're coolin' with your gurl or partying with your friends, this is for you. Have a good time, that's what we're doing. Thanx for donating. Peace. NBF $($)$
